Atal Tunnel has officially been certified by the World Book of Records, as the 'World's Longest Highway Tunnel above 10,000 Feet at a length of 9.02 km. It reduces the travel time between Manali and Keylong on the way to Leh from 5-6 hours to about 45 minutes. The tunnel is more convinient than other roads as it bypasses most of the sites that were prone to road blockades, and avalanches.

Atal tunnel was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 3 October 2020. The cost of the entire project is around ₹3,200 crore.

There are various safety measures taken to ensure safety of the travellers through the tunnel. Fire hydrants are provided at specific locations throughout the tunnel. It also has a public announcement system with loudspeakers installed at regular intervals. The tunnel is equipped with avalanche control structures. CCTV cameras are placed for vehicular monitoring. Pollution sensors continuously monitor the air quality in the tunnel and if it is below the desired level, fresh air is injected into the tunnel via two heavy duty fans on each side of the tunnel.
